Detoxing Root Vegetables Soup - Real Italian Kitchen

Want a creamy potato soup without all the starch? Try this great alternative that uses all the root vegetables that are in season during the winter months.

Rutabaga, turnips, leeks, celery root, they are all rich in minerals, vitamin C, antioxidants and anti-cancer compounds, they also have antimicrobials antibacterial and anti fungal properties!

They help us detox our blood and support heart and blood vessels health. AND they are in season during the dark winter months, when nothing else grows in cold cold Pennsylvania! I hope you’ll try this, don’t forget to like, comment and share and if you make it take a picture and #realitaliankitchen !

Because my husband still eats meat (I still eat it, but don't mind a vegan meal once in a while...), I toasted some spicy sausage crumbles to pour on top of the soup instead of croutons. Yummy. I almost wanted to try it...

I hope you'll enjoy this and I hope you'll feel better after eating some healthy root vegetables!

The power of freshly squeezed Orange Juice

Orange Juice: my favorite thing!!

I started my day with breakfast, a yoga workout and then ahhh!!! Orange Juice!!!

Forget the one in the box, I squeeze my own juice!
I bought this exact citrus juicer to make the squeezing faster, I put it on MAX PULP and benefit from all that natural fiber that you find in the "chunks" of the orange. It's important to drink it right away so it doesn't loose its vitamin power.

What are oranges good for?

Vitamin C, of course, everybody knows that, I won't talk about that. Just know that your body can only take so much vitamin C per day, so it's useless to drown yourself in orange juice, and also a bit dangerous considering it's sugar content and acidity.

I mentioned fiber: like all fruits and vegetables oranges are rich in fiber, those annoying chunks should become your new best friend.
When you eat oranges, the fiber from the fruit helps slow the rate of food absorption from your gut (it means they take long to digest). This slower absorption rate helps control blood sugar levels. Dietary fiber also helps lower your cholesterol and reduces your risk of heart related problems.

Oranges are also a powerful anti oxidant: they help decrease the inflammation that occurs after eating a meal high in fat and carbs. Let's add it to our list of foods to eat after big meals, fried food or a night of drinking!

FOR ONE PERSON:

2/3 oranges (it depends on size and juiciness)

Personally I like my juice a bit tart, I always add half a lemon or a tart clementine. No sugar.

I hope I convinced you to start squeezing your own orange juice!!

Enjoy!

The Italian "Lifestyle" DIET

I've been on a very healthy diet for a month and I lost 2.5 kg! It's more or less 5 pounds I think.
5 pounds a month, for someone who's not obese, is the best way to loose weight.
To do that you just have to change your eating habits. I'm not on a "starvation" diet. I have dessert if I feel like it. It's just a matter of what dessert and when. And exercise.

So here's a list of what I do. It's working for me and for my boyfriend, if you try it out let me know how it goes:

1. Always make sure there's plenty of fruits and vegetables in the house. Better if seasonal. Even better if it's local or at least from neighbor States.
2. Always make sure that the snacks you buy are healthy, organic, low fat.
3. Don't buy any candy bars, sodas, fruit juices loaded up with corn syrup and colorants. If they are in the house, throw them away. Flavored water is junk, just drink water with some lemon in it if you really can't stand the taste of just water. Water down your juices or even better, make fresh fruit juice with seasonal fruits and veggies.
4. Drink at least 2 liters of water per day. If you don't hydrate yourself your body goes into "survival mode" and you start retaining water. Therefore the bloating.
5. Limit salt. I also mean chips and everything that is highly salted and flavored. Because that also makes you retain liquids. Therefore the bloating.
6. Fats are important,  but only the good ones: dark chocolate is a great antioxidant, you're recommended 2 and a half spoon of raw extra virgin olive oil per person per day (I measure it). Avocados and Bananas have essential fats, very important for digestive health, but only eat them once a week. Nuts and almonds are also a great source of essential fats. They are great eaten 2 hours before working out or right after.
7. It is good habit to have a certain amount of carbs in your diet (rice, pasta, bread, fruit, nuts) but don't overdo it. Try to find a good balance between how much you work out and your carb intake.
8. Always buy organic meats. I know it costs more, but you'll save on future doctor's appointments, I swear. Plus is very cool to support your local butcher instead of corporations that exploit and full out TORTURE animals. I haven't bought a piece of meat from the grocery store in one month and my skin looks better, i don't feel bloated all the time, and I'm SURE that's because I'm not ingesting any hormones and antibiotics through meat.
9. Try to eat fish twice a week. Tilapia is really cheap for example, almost as cheap as chicken, and there are some very yummy recipes online!
10. Red meat only every 10 days, so put down that hamburger. I said PUT IT DOWN!
11. Stay away from fried food or if you really must have it, eat only fish or vegetarian the day after, so you can give your liver a break. Same thing goes for alcohol. Vegetables that detox your liver are: zucchini, artichokes, dandelion, spinach.
12. Exercise. Anything goes. A longer walk to get to work. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Do it once and it won't bring any results, but if you do it every day for a month you'll start noticing abs and a waste line. Don't do too much anaerobic work (weight lifting and co) because it adds weight and makes you retain water.  What really makes you loose weight and burn calories is cardio work (running, biking, walking, jumping, dancing, sex...).
13. Keep a log of what you eat (I'm not talking about calorie counting, I hate that bullsh**. I can never keep track of it and it's extremely time consuming).  You'll notice that certain foods give you more energy, others make you sleepy or too full, that an apple in the middle of the afternoon makes you feel like you've had a large meal. Some foods put you in a good mood others make you grumpy. Take all the negative stuff out of your diet, nobody can tell you what it is because it is different for each person, so you'll have to do some experiments and a little bit of homework. I can't have a lot of sugars for example, it really makes me depressed, gives me cramps makes me swell up like a balloon. So I cut doughnuts, cookies, cakes, frosting, sodas from my diet entirely. I'd rather have a good frozen yogurt with some fresh fruit for dessert then something extremely sugary that I'm gonna love for 15 minutes and hate for 48 hours.
14. Get a good night of sleep. Wake up early, go to bed early. Some studies show that everything you eat before 9am is burned right before lunch time. In the evening some say no carbs after 6pm, I just eat something light and easy to digest for dinner, fish or vegetables, some fruit. No midnight snacking. If the midnight snacking is necessary refer back to point number 11.

I'm not a dietician but I've studied food properties and I'm well informed about how food can affect your weight, your life, your mood. This isn't a diet, it's a life style. To be specific is the "average italian's life style". It took me a while to be able to find ways of keeping it up over in the States but I finally think I found my balance. I eat what I want within these limits and the weight keeps coming off.

So good luck to everybody, I'll let you know in another month if I was able to reach my goal weight!

Light Lunch: Vegetables and a slice of good cheese

Sometimes in Italy we don't feel like cooking elaborate things.
Sometimes a slice of cheese is more then enough to build a balanced lunch.

I always try to have some of my favorite cheese around. Right now I'm having a love affair with this Sheep Cheese (Formaggio di Pecora) that I bought on Supermarket Italy, an online import of italian goods. It's called Gioioso, it's a Primo Sale, meaning that is a lean kind of cheese that didn't season for a long time.

You can choose to use it in many different ways, I have a video on a salad with cheese, green apple and pistachios on my channel, if you want to check it out.

But today it's cold, I want to use my oven to warm up the house and  make some awesome roasted veggies.

Ingredients:
Carrots
Peppers
Zucchini
Eggplant
Potatoes
Garlic

Cut the carrots, zucchini and peppers in thin strips (julienne) and lay them randomly on a baking sheet covered by oven paper (the correct english word is escaping me right now). Cut the eggplant and the potatoes in thin slices and also put them on the same baking sheet. Oil, salt, minced garlic. The cook for 10/15 minutes on a medium temperature oven, depending on the kind of oven you have. I like them particularly well cooked, sometimes I even leave them in there for 20 minutes risking to burn them. Don't do that.
Pictures coming soon! Probably after lunch time, american eastern :-)
Enjoy!

Start your day with a kick: cardio before breakfast.

This is something I read a long time ago that really gets me going in the morning and apparently also makes your metabolism accelerate.

A cardio workout means get your heart beat to rise. It doesn't have to be for a long time, it could be only for a minute.

I take the dog out for example. I live on the 3rd floor and we both sprint down and up the stairs.

Some people like to turn the radio up and just jam to the music. I can't imagine a better way to start the day.

Other people run for the bus. That counts.

I got mad at politicians this morning and how narrow minded they are. That made my heart beat rise. Does that count? Unfortunately I don't think so. The only thing that accelerates is my ulcer.

So get your blood pumping and face the day with a smile. We all have to do what we have to do.
Let's try to do it with some positivity.

I hope you all have a great day!

How to recover from a day of fried/heavy food

I had a terrible day of eating today.

Very weird chinese food for lunch (fish dipped in a very oily broth) and one glass of red wine and fries for dinner. Not good.

So what to do to recover from such a day of bad heavy food? The answer is fish.
It has been proven that fish helps eliminate toxins, helps detox the liver and the kidneys.

In the spirit of detox tomorrow's menu will be:

Breakfast:
Fresh fruit juice with oranges, celery, dandelion, apples.
A toasted piece of bread with a veil of jam.
Coffee or tea, no sugar
Nuts or yogurt.

Snack:
Yogurt or nuts

Lunch:
Grilled Mahi Mahi with seasonal vegetables (raw, steamed, grilled or baked).
Crackers.
Coffee or tea.

Snack:
Fruit Fruit Fruit

Dinner:
Tilapia with tomatoes and cilantro.
Rice.
A diuretic tea with a spoon of honey.

Check back tomorrow for the recipes.
Have a great night and if you are in Philadelphia, don't forget to look at the sky tonight, it's beautiful, so clear.
